LinkedIn Lowdown: 7 Easy Ways to Stand-Out in a Sea of Users

Currently, LinkedIn has over 575 million users. If you’re at the top of your “industry game,” then you’re probably one of them. If not, we’re here to let you know… it’s never too late to take this extra step!

As a social platform, LinkedIn was created to help people connect and engage with each other on a professional level. But it’s the personal touch to a profile that often stands out in a sea of users. It’s important to put your best foot forward on this platform, just as you would on any other platform where customers, prospects, competitors, and job seekers can find you.

We know that creating and maintaining a thought-provoking, engagement-driving profile can feel tedious and time-consuming. That’s why we want to help simplify the process for you.

Below are 7 suggestions for easily and quickly making a stand-out impression on LinkedIn.

1. Please, Keep It Professional

Whether it’s your profile or the content you share, professionalism goes a long way. You may think this tip is a no-brainer, but many LinkedIn users today don’t realize that merely being on the platform isn’t enough to stand-out. In fact, blurry, ill-cropped photos and irrelevant or incomplete information can actually paint you in a negative light.

To ensure you are being as professional as possible on this platform, you can:

  • Upload a high-quality headshot
  • Grammar and spell check all copy on your page (including your posts)
  • Avoid sharing posts that don’t follow these guidelines

2. Utilize Your Space Well

Believe it or not, there are numerous ways to stand out on LinkedIn if you know how to best utilize your space. Under the “Add Profile Section” area on your page, you’ll notice there are several sections you can add to go the extra mile.

Some sections on your page that are best for getting personal or creative are your headline, about section, work samples, and cover photo (just to name a few).

3. Remain Relevant

Today’s internet users are a passionate bunch. But, no matter what your beliefs, LinkedIn is NOT the platform to share controversial topics. Avoid discussion on subjects like politics and religion as it could potentially alienate customers, prospects, and job seekers from your company. Additionally, these topics typically do little to nothing to help others succeed on a professional level, which is the goal of being on this platform after all.

Some topics that are good to share and allow for creative interpretation are:

  • Case studies and work samples
  • Customer pain points (but make sure to provide a solution!)
  • Thought-provoking industry trends
  • Tips of the trade (especially great for those in financial, management, or marketing-related fields)
  • Company announcements or achievements
  • Promotions, openings, or general job updates

4. Tell a Story

We can’t tell you how many profiles we’ve seen that highlight the user’s work experience and current position… and nothing more. If that sounds like you, then you’re missing out on a key opportunity on this platform.

From your About section to the content you post, don’t be afraid to have a little fun with your message. While it’s important to remain professional, it’s equally important to add personality and creativity to your page, as these are the things that people notice most and increase your chance of being recalled later.

5. Connect with the Right People

Many times, people will use LinkedIn to connect with anyone and everyone they cross paths with. However, if you’re connecting with strangers or people outside of your target audience, you may be doing more harm than good.

While having a lot of connections may feel like the best thing to do, it’s the quality of your connections that really counts. If someone sees a post with one like, they may ignore it or accidentally draw the conclusion that it lacks substance. But a post with 100+ likes may garner more attention.

So, how do you get 100+ likes? First, you need to connect with the right people. The more relevant your content is to your connections, or the more closely you know your connections, the more likely they are to engage.

6. Engage Effectively

Don’t just engage, engage effectively to make a long-lasting impact! Keep it positive and professional when sharing or engaging with others on this platform, and don’t be afraid to take the extra steps to chat with users directly.

Ways to engage with people that leave a positive, lasting impact include:

  • Liking others’ posts and comments
  • Posting your own thought-provoking comments
  • Sending messages with relevant content or information included
  • Congratulating connections on any professional successes or promotions
  • Endorsing and recommending connections (more on this below!)

7. Give Recommendations & Endorsements

This is probably one of our favorite tips, as these LinkedIn features often go undetected or simply aren’t utilized. In marketing, word-of-mouth is the most effective, powerful tool we have. On LinkedIn, recommendations and endorsements serve as a way to spread word-of-mouth about how great you, your company, or your work is.

The best way to ensure you get recommendations and endorsements of your own (besides asking for them) is to give them first. Think about the people you’ve partnered with that have made your life or job easier. If they’re on LinkedIn, go to their page and scroll to the bottom to give them some love! Most will receive a message to approve your “review” before it’s posted, and as a thank-you may return the favor.

Once you get a few of these, you can organize them by relevance to your current position. From there, anyone who views your profile will be able to see the (hopefully nice) comments about working with you and may feel more inclined to partner up!
